Most simple forges are pretty much the same and you can easily build one out of some easily found parts. You can do it with some welding or you can do it without any welding at all. I show you, in this video, how this simple forge is made. I give you tips on how to make it and how to improvise your own forge.

The basic set up is an old rusty brake drum with a few pieces of pipe and hair dryer. This is really all you need and you can stand the whole thing up on top of some cinder blocks. In the case of this forge we used the deck from an old broken lawn mower. The deck is the part that protects the spinning lawn mower blade. We simply turned it over and it forms a nice pit for the charcoal.

You can do a lot of improvising with a forge set up like this. As you watch the video you will see that it is just some tubing and a brake drum. You don't even need the shell that is the lawnmower deck.

This just makes handling the fire, coal and tools much easier. You can just make the basic set up and then stand it up with some cinder blocks or bricks then you are ready to do some forging!

How to Make a Propane Forge

This picture shows you a close up view under the forge. It is pretty straight forward. The drum brake is on top and the trap door is on the bottom. This trap door remains closed while the forge is going and you open it up to clean out all the fallen soot and coal. The most difficult thing here is to connect the pipes together and connect the pipe to the drum brake.

You can do this all with welding or you can actually use plumbing pipes and thread it all together. Just be sure you don't use any galvanized piping. It can give off a toxic fume lead. So the first thing I did was set out on building the forge burners. I built them with parts from the plumbing aisle of my local big box hardware store. First with a small drill bit for pilot holes, and then followed by a larger bit. I then finished up with a file to turn the many holes into long slots. I then drilled and tapped a hole on the side of the cap for a set screw to ensure it stays put.

Now for the choke sleeves. These control the air flow by adjusting the air-fuel mixture. I cut a section about a half inch longer than the slots and cleaned it up.

I chucked it on my lathe to sand a smooth slope towards the inside on one end which helps with air flow. Then I added a set screw and moved on to the nozzles. We have an example of when I was too excited and forgot to take good pictures.

No one gas forge can do it all. Gas forges are easy to make and in time you may make several. A 5" dia x 10" long chamber will do a LOT of forging, and is very manageable for a first project. A good idea is to make a small 2" dia hole at the back, so that long work can poke through, and to leave a large open window at the front which can be blocked up with firebrick to suit the work. Soft firebrick is preferable to the cheapy, heavy yellow things you buy at the hardware store. Don't be tempted to box it up too tight. Expanding hot gas needs to vent. If the forge is properly insulated, then only the area around the mouth will get to red heat. If you do go for heavy construction, keep the weight down to something you can lift by yourself. I have made a few forges so I have a good idea how they go together but I will give reference and credit to Ron Reil and his designs, that is where I learned how to build them over 12 years ago. This forge can be used for knife making, blacksmithing, glass making or anything else you can think of that requires heating up stuff to a really hot temperature.

I have access to a welder so I was able to weld some parts together for this forge but if you don't have access or know how to weld, an option is you can braze the parts together or be creative and bolt things together. Not included in the steps is how to build an operate a propane burner, I have another Instructable for that, which you can check out here:.

Important Warning : Do not attempt this Instructable if you do not have experience with propane and how it burns. If you are not comfortable around propane do not attempt this. When propane if used properly is a very safe fuel but bad things can still happen.

This burner is very large and can damage you and property. You have been warned, I take no responsibility if something goes wrong. Always wear safety equipment when lighting and working on the burner. At a minimum, safety glasses or face shield, cotton long sleeves or leather, do not wear synthetic materials as if they catch on fire they will melt to your body. I highly recommend watching the video for the construction and operation of the forge. The written steps follow. I notice that it heats up quicker and uses less fuel than a previous forge using a regular kiln refractory don't remember the type. If you have the extra money spend it on the ITC For the forge body is a portable air tank. But you can use anything that is similar, such as a used Freon or propane tank.

I have used a steel pipe I found at the scrap yard that worked very well. The air tank I am using has a built in stand to keep it from falling over so this saves me a step or else I would need to add some feet.

I'll leave it to your imagination to add the feet to what ever tank or tube you use, suggestions are some large bolts or weld on some tubing. I used a pot that was a good size to trace out the size of the opening. A compass could be used as well. I cut the ends off both ends of the tank using a thin kerf cutting disc on a mini grinder. The placement of the tube was at the top of the forge and placed on an angle. The hole was marked and then cut out, I didn't have a hole saw the proper size so I drilled holes all the way around the circle and then used a Dremel with a cutting disc to cut it out.Mention the word "blacksmithing" to most folks nowadays, and they'll probably conjure up a mental image of someone shoeing a horse.

To homesteaders who master the basics of the craft, though, smithing can mean far more: the making of hinges, latches for doors and windows, shutter catches, door knockers, lightning rods, gutter hooks, beam end braces. A forge can be set up almost anywhere personal preference dictates: in a house, basement, tipi, barn, dome, shed. How to Make a DIY Backyard Forge

Since money is quite scarce with some of us, I'll now begin by outlining the simplest and least expensive method of constructing a forge. You'll need the following basic materials: 2 by 4's or 4 by 4's, small saplings, or whatever sturdy wood you can locatesome plywood or planking, dirt, 6 feet of 3 inch pipe, a modest amount of concrete, and a little patience. A good size for the top of your forge is 3 by 5 feet. This gives you room for a healthy fire, with plenty of extra space to lay out tongs, shovel, poker, pieces of metal, and numerous other odds and ends.

The frame should be about waist high so that you can work most efficiently as you move iron back and forth from forge to anvil. Decide on the ideal measurements for your own setup, and build a strong frame to those dimensions. Once you've got a good solid framework together, close in the four sides with boards, plywood, or whatever is available.

The only absolute requirement is that the covering be strong enough to hold large amounts of dirt, rock, and concrete. A hole — large enough to admit the air pipe — must then be cut in the center of each end of the forge, about 8 inches from its top. Insert the tube so that a length of about 6 inches extends from either end of the frame, and fill the box to the level of the pipe with earth, stone, brick, or mud.
